This guide to sample preparation can aid you in optimizing counting of
common biological samples. Many of the protocols are updated from "A Sample
Preparation Guide Using Beckman Coulter Ready-Solv™ Cocktails for Liquid Scintillation
Counting," originally prepared by Dr. Stephen W. Wunderly and Dennis H. Mooney.
To obtain a sample preparation procedure, simple click on the
appropriate section below and then select the appropriate sample type. If you cannot find
the exact sample type, try a procedure for a sample type that comes close to your own
sample.

Notes
on Ready Cap
In many applications that require counting of radioactive liquids, Ready
Cap with Xtalscint™ solid scintillator can be used to replace cocktail without
tedious sample preparation steps. The use of this product is not specifically documented
in this Guide. Instead, general instructions for its use are provided in the Ready Cap section on this web site.
You may use Ready Cap whenever you are counting aqueous solutions or
organic solvents containing non-volatile radioactivity, subject to the following
limitations:
- Sample must be equal to or less than 200 µL.
- Quench must be constant.
- No excessive color (weak color such as that in tissue culture media is eliminated during
drying).
- Solute concentration less than 1M.
- No sucrose or CsCl gradients.
- No non-volatile solvents (e.g., glycerol); however acceptable counting efficiencies may
be obtained with energetic beta emitters (e.g., 32P) without drying.

Notes on Ready Flow III
Ready Flow III was originally designed for use with flow detectors.
However, because of its high sample holding capacity it can also be used efficiently with
mini-vials, Bio-Vial™ and Microfuge® tubes.
